Review: T-Mobile Sidekick 3

The Sidekick’s powerful messaging features have earned it wide popularity with teens, twens, and quite a few celebrities (including Paris Hilton). The new T-Mobile Sidekick 3 received a number of notable improvements and additions that should keep it popular with the groups it is currently so hot with. The new T-Mobile Sidekick 3 features a number of cool improvements, including a sleeker design, a 1.3-megapixel camera, an integrated music player, Bluetooth for hands-free calling, and EDGE support. It also offers a Mini SD card slot, a speakerphone, and world phone support. It still does not replace an iPod or a laptop computer, but for being on the road it is a very good device to have. We’re also very surprised that T-Mobile decided to not include Bluetooth 2.0 or Wi-Fi with the Sidekick 3.

At 5.1 by 2.3 by 0.8 inches, the T-Mobile Sidekick 3 is a notch thinner in width and depth than the older Sidekick II. It gained a little weight compared to the Sidekick II, but that is not a surprise considering the new features that were packed into the handset. Overall it comes close to a normal handheld phone or PDA in regards to handling and usability. One thing we did not like – to dial a number not in your address book the phone has to be opened. There is no outside keypad available for quickly dialing a new number. The navigation controls on the front of the T-Mobile Sidekick 3 remain largely unchanged from those of the Sidekick 2. However – the buttons seems to be a little closer together. The T-Mobile Sidekick’s QWERTY keyboard is one of the best we’ve seen on a smartphone this year.

The T-Mobile Sidekick 3 comes with a 2.75-inch TFT screen that offers a 240×160 pixel resolution and 65,000 colors. While the screen output is Ok, it is bad compared to what other phones/manufacturers offer today.

The Sidekick 3 will be available exclusively online to T-Mobile customers first, starting June 28, then in retail stores nationwide on July 10
